One of the best way to learn about the setup of an external render for Blender, is to grab a full scene and take a look on how the author manage to achieve the level of realism and detail for a particular scene. If you are interested on a great example to study Blender and LuxRender, Daniel Salazar (AKA ZanQdo) just posted on the LuxRender user forums his scene called Sala, which can be downloaded by anyone for free.
