Working with architecture and design in Blender often requires the use of external files or resources.
In this field, SketchUp has a widespread presence in the architecture and interior design business.
Many people use it to create quick 3D models, and millions of assets are available as SKP files.
Whenever I recommend Blender as a design tool for interior design, woodworking, or architecture, one
of the first questions I get is whether it can read or import SKP files. For this reason, I always
keep an updated guide and article explaining how to import SKP files to Blender. Here are the previous
two articles:
- How to Import SketchUp 2023 (SKP) Files into Blender 4.0?
- How to Import SketchUp 2022 (SKP) Files to Blender 3.0?
With each Blender update, artists wonder if they will need to update their add-ons to continue importing
SketchUp files.
Tutorial – Importing SketchUp 2024 Files to Blender 4.2
To help you with the most up-to-date information, I created a short tutorial featuring the most recent
versions of both SketchUp and Blender. In the tutorial, I explain how to install the add-on that enables
SKP file import to Blender and show some examples.

One benefit of this process is that SketchUp still uses the same SKP format from previous versions. In
version 2024, Trimble removed the “version” option for SKP files. They don't provide an option to save
projects as older versions, but SketchUp still uses the same format from version 2021. This is great for
Blender because all the add-ons and scripts will continue to work.
The only updates needed came from Blender due to changes in the Python API.
Downloading the Add-on and Example Files
If you want to follow the same procedure described in the tutorial, you can download the resources from
the following locations:
The ability to import SketchUp files to Blender opens up many possibilities in design and modeling. You
can grab assets from the 3D Warehouse to use in Blender.
Using Blender for Architecture and Interior Design
If you want to further develop your skills with Blender as a design tool, we have many resources available
at Blender 3D Architect. The first is a series we call “Precise Modeling for Architecture, Engineering,
and 3D Printing.” This book focuses on teaching precision modeling in Blender, as if it were a CAD tool.
The second resource is our workshop about Blender for architecture. It's a series of videos explaining how
to use Blender for architectural projects, which also covers using Blender as a CAD tool:
- Blender 4.0: Precise Modeling for Architecture, Engineering, and 3D Printing – eBook – Paperback
- Blender 4.0 – Modélisation précise pour l'architecture, l'ingénierie et l'impression 3D – eBook – Paperback
- Blender for Architecture (Workshop) – Gumroad
A highlight of our series and methodology, produced under the B3DA Learning seal, is the focus on
step-by-step instructions. Each subject or topic is presented as a series of numbered steps with clear
instructions on how to complete that particular task.
If you've already purchased any of our books, thank you! We appreciate your support of our work at
Blender 3D Architect. Don't forget to add a review or rating if you found the resources helpful –
it greatly assists our efforts to provide quality learning materials for the Blender community.
